In a Facebook post, PSD MEP Victor Negrescu highlighted the issues related to the lack of transparency and real consultation in the decision-making process regarding the EU-Mercosur trade agreement. He emphasized that Romania did not have a clear agenda and waited for allies to negotiate, disregarding its alliances within the EU. Negrescu mentioned that the impact of the quality of products from Latin America and dumping prices on Romanian agriculture had not been analyzed. As a result, he sent an urgent interpellation to the European Commission, requesting additional controls and a compensatory financial mechanism for affected farmers.
He emphasized that Romania can still reduce the negative impact and protect the economy and agriculture, warning that poor management of this agreement could fuel euroscepticism. The EU-Mercosur agreement was recently approved by the majority of member states, after 25 years of negotiations.
