PNL Secretary General Robert Sighiartău said Tuesday evening that the party’s entry into opposition represents an opportunity to reform the organization, and publicly thanked PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu, the Social Democrats, and President Nicușor Dan.
Sighiartău argued that Sorin Grindeanu’s strategy and his cooperation with the President of Romania contributed to the breakup of the PNL-PSD coalition and to distancing the liberals from the period of “cohabitation” that began in 2021. He said that Grindeanu gave the liberals the necessary reasons to understand that they could no longer remain in government alongside the PSD.
The PNL leader said that, following the attempt to break up the party, liberal politicians who, in his view, made decisions based on the agreements and political interests established with the Social Democrats became visible. Sighiartău argued that they gained courage after being assured that removing the Bolojan Government could lead to a change in the PNL leadership.
He noted that he had not met Sorin Grindeanu personally, but that he intended to thank him for what he considers to be the “revival” of the PNL.
