PNL MEP Siegfried Mureșan criticizes the proposal for Marian Neacșu to take over the Ministry of Internal Affairs and argues that a serious prime minister would not accept a person with a criminal conviction into the Government. The statement was made in a Facebook post, amid the formation of the Executive led by prime minister-designate Luca Niculescu.
Mureșan says that a prime minister who has no say in the composition of his own Government raises questions about his authority. However, the liberal's criticism brings back into discussion an issue of political consistency: Neacșu also held the position of deputy prime minister in the Government led by liberal Ilie Bolojan, which was sworn in in June 2025.
Marian Neacșu was definitively sentenced in 2016 to six months in prison, suspended, for a conflict of interest, after hiring his daughter at his parliamentary office. Subsequently, he benefited from rehabilitation as a matter of law, a situation also confirmed by the Constitutional Court.
According to the Administrative Code, a person convicted of a crime may become a member of the Government if rehabilitation has occurred. Thus, Neacșu's nomination is legally possible, and Mureșan's message represents political criticism of the proposal.
