PSD President Sorin Grindeanu announced on Thursday, after consultations with designated Prime Minister Luca Niculescu, that the Social Democrats reject the formation of a technocratic government. The PSD leader believes that such an Executive would be too „weak" to manage the economic and political challenges of the period ahead.
Grindeanu explained that the future government will have to adopt the budget revision and prepare the budget, measures that require solid political support in Parliament. He cited the experience of the Cioloș Government, which, he said, although it was invested with the votes of a broad parliamentary majority, quickly became „nobody’s government”.
PSD maintains that Romania needs a „committed and transparent" political solution. Grindeanu specified that the party will not participate in a „situational" majority, but acknowledged the possibility of parliamentary agreements, including to support a minority government. These should guarantee the Executive’s stability until 2028 and provide it with credibility for adopting budgetary measures.
The designated prime minister began consultations with the parliamentary parties on Thursday to form the new Government and obtain the investiture vote. After the meeting with PSD, discussions with PNL and UDMR are scheduled. Also on Thursday, Sorin Grindeanu convened a new meeting of the PSD leadership to inform his colleagues about the negotiations.
