PSD leadership discussed on Monday, October 12, the conditions under which the party could join the government and support the formation of an executive led by designated Prime Minister Luca Niculescu. According to transcripts published by Antena 3 CNN, the Social Democratic leaders held differing positions, ranging from taking over the prime minister’s office to triggering snap elections.
Olguța Vasilescu reportedly said that, if Niculescu fails to meet expectations, he could be removed after six months. Gheorghe Șoldan argued that PSD should join the government only if it secures leadership of the executive, saying that the party would bear the political costs of a potential failure.
MEP Dragoș Benea reportedly called for a firm decision: either PSD joins the government with a central role, or it prepares for snap elections. Secretary-General Claudiu Manda cited a 50% chance of the government winning parliamentary approval and called for preparations for a possible snap election.
Sorin Grindeanu made PSD’s participation conditional on PNL and UDMR joining the executive and insisted on a stable parliamentary majority. He ruled out supporting a technocratic or hybrid government. Negotiations with Luca Niculescu will continue; however, in the absence of an agreement between the parties, PSD is considering the snap-election scenario.
