PNL refuses to join a government with PSD, while the Social Democrats claim the position of prime minister

PNL and PSD no longer jointly support the formation of the future government, amid the consultations due to take place at Cotroceni Palace and President Nicușor Dan’s announcement regarding the appointment of the prime minister. The Liberals said they would not vote for any cabinet that includes the Social Democrats, regardless of who is proposed for the position of prime minister.

PNL Secretary-General Robert Sighiartău said the party could consider only a technocratic government made up of professionals with no subordinate ties to political parties. He specified that, if the designated prime minister builds a political cabinet around PSD, the Liberals will not support it.

PNL says it is not afraid of entering the Opposition and will focus its efforts on rebuilding the party and preparing an alternative for the 2028 elections.

On the other hand, PSD announced that it is ready to take responsibility for governing and for the position of prime minister. Natalia Intotero said the Social Democrats would present a program with ten priorities for economic recovery and are awaiting the swift appointment of someone capable of building a majority.
