Oana Țoiu, nominated for the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government led by designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan, received a favorable opinion on Tuesday from the joint parliamentary committees on foreign policy, on Romanian communities outside the country's borders, and on Romanians everywhere.
Following the hearing, the nomination was approved by 29 votes “in favor” and 23 votes “against.” The committees’ opinion is advisory and does not constitute the actual appointment to office.
During the hearings, Florin Manole (PSD) asked Oana Țoiu whether it was justified for the Romanian state to pay $21,000 for the residence of Romania’s ambassador to Washington, Andrei Muraru. Țoiu stated that the housing contract had been extended during the terms of office of several PSD prime ministers.
Clement Sava (PACE) then asked her why, during her visit to New York, she had met with representatives of countries such as Congo, Nepal, and Ghana, and whether Romania would prioritize its relationship with the United States.
Țoiu rejected the question, stating that she had held bilateral meetings with approximately 20 countries, including Singapore and Kazakhstan, and criticized Sava’s approach toward African countries.
Hearings for the ministers nominated for the new Cabinet continued in Parliament on Tuesday. Each candidate is evaluated by the relevant committees before the investiture vote.
Parliament’s plenary session is scheduled to reconvene on Wednesday to vote on the government program and the list of ministers nominated by Siegfried Mureșan.
