President Nicușor Dan held meetings in Prague on Wednesday with Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, Senate President Miloš Vystrčil and Chamber of Deputies President Tomio Okamura, during his official visit to the Czech Republic at the invitation of President Petr Pavel.
The talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, coordination at the European level, and collaboration in security and the defense industry. A new element was the emphasis on joint involvement in negotiations on the European Union’s next Multiannual Financial Framework, considered essential for the EU’s long-term competitiveness, cohesion and stability.
Nicușor Dan announced that, together with Andrej Babiš, he had examined ways in which Romania and the Czech Republic can cooperate as European negotiations advance. The two also discussed strengthening defense on the Eastern Flank and the need for credible deterrence to protect peace in Europe.
In meetings with the leaders of the Czech Parliament, Romania’s president expressed interest in developing the parliamentary dimension of bilateral relations. Intensifying contacts between the two legislatures is expected to complement cooperation between governments and institutions.
The president also underscored the role of the Romanian community in the Czech Republic and the Czech minority in Romania in bringing the two states closer, as well as the importance of their shared history for future cooperation.
