Nicuşor Dan pays tribute to the victims of the Hamas attack and calls for the organization’s disarmament to achieve lasting peace in Gaza

President Nicuşor Dan sent a message of solidarity with Israel on Wednesday, three years after the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023, in which approximately 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 were abducted and taken hostage in the Gaza Strip.

“Today I pay tribute to the victims and stand with their families and the Israeli people,” the head of state wrote on the X platform. He condemned the attack and the antisemitism that followed, stating that “there is no justification for such barbarity.”

Nicuşor Dan said that peace in Gaza can be built only through the complete disarmament of Hamas. The president said that Romania supports the Board of Peace and has opened its hospitals to children from Gaza. He called for the fragile ceasefire to be transformed into a lasting solution that would provide security for Israelis and a state for Palestinians.

The attack by Hamas and other extremist groups triggered the war in Gaza. According to the Hamas-controlled health authority, the conflict has caused more than 74,000 Palestinian deaths. The main officials of the European Union also conveyed messages of solidarity with Israel.
