UDMR President Kelemen Hunor said Tuesday that PNL should not refer the matter to the Constitutional Court if the president does not initiate the procedure for snap elections, because, in his view, the party will lose the case.
He made the statement on Antena 3, in the context of the initiative announced by PNL following a possible vote to reject the Mureșan Cabinet. The Liberals said they could turn to the Constitutional Court if the head of state does not begin the procedures for snap elections.
Kelemen Hunor argued that the Constitution gives the president only the option, not the obligation, to dissolve Parliament. “It says there that the president may dissolve [Parliament],” the UDMR leader said, explaining that this wording was intentionally included in the institutional framework and in defining the president’s powers.
In this context, Kelemen Hunor believes that the Constitutional Court judges will interpret the same constitutional provision and that PNL’s appeal would be rejected. “I believe they should not go to the Constitutional Court, because they will suffer a defeat,” he said.
