Kelemen Hunor does not guarantee that Siegfried Mureșan has the 233 votes needed to invest the government: “We cannot say that we are on the right track”

Kelemen Hunor said on Monday that he could not predict the outcome of the investiture vote scheduled for Wednesday in Parliament for the government proposed by prime minister-designate Siegfried Mureșan. The UDMR leader said that, at this point, the 233 votes needed are not secured and urged caution in assessing the cabinet’s chances.

According to his calculations, the political parties contacted would provide 229 votes, four fewer than the required threshold. Kelemen Hunor added, however, that negotiations are continuing and that Mureșan is trying to secure the support of the political parties responsible for forming a majority.

The UDMR leader stressed that the parliamentary procedure would be carried through to the end, up to the investiture vote. If the government is rejected, the decision on the next nomination will belong to the president. Kelemen Hunor said that the head of state cannot be forced to dissolve Parliament, because the Constitution states that he “may” do so, not that he is obliged to. He suggested that, if the current proposal fails, a new nomination backed by the political bloc with the most seats could be considered.
