AUR President George Simion had a reserved reaction to the death of former President Ion Iliescu, declaring that "he has gone to God" and refusing to comment further. While attending an event in Warsaw, Simion evoked the fact that during Iliescu's time in office, parties were not banned, unlike the current administration. Although he criticized Klaus Iohannis' regime, he avoided directly comparing the two leaders. Simion, known for his past criticism of Iliescu, recalled an incident in 2009 when he went to the former president's house with candles, expressing his desire to "pay for the crimes of '89".
