Dan Dungaciu, first vice-president of AUR, states that the refusal of president Nicușor Dan to consider early elections is based not only on political blockages but also on electoral strategies for the upcoming presidential elections. Dungaciu believes that early elections could radically change the political scene, affecting Nicușor Dan's project.
He compares the situation to Iliescu searching for a Vadim, suggesting that Nicușor Dan would like to limit AUR's access to the mainstream to protect his chances for a second term. Dungaciu emphasizes that Nicușor Dan's refusal is influenced by a "sanitary cordon" established by Brussels against parties labeled as extremist. He argues that early elections would allow AUR to demonstrate that it is not extremist, which would pose a threat to Nicușor Dan.
"At this moment, from an electoral point of view, Nicușor Dan is an Iliescu in search of a Vadim. Because the entire political construction around Nicușor Dan has been based on the idea that president Dan must occupy the center and that, in any case, he is better than the extremes that compete with him. Occupying the center and building an expansive alternative to the extreme represents one of the victorious solutions of the politician Nicușor Dan, currently president. This scenario is prepared for the second term. What he needs to do is to show that this area is extremist, unacceptable, anti-European, anti-NATO, anti everything you can imagine, in order to close it off and push this area towards the extreme as much as possible. He pushes it to the extreme because that is where the danger comes from. This is also the explanation for why the mainstream majority, including Mr. Nicușor Dan, accepts sovereignist-type parties, POT, SOS, Peace, because they do not pose an electoral danger to him," said AUR's first vice-president, Dan Dungaciu.
