Romania’s first priority is to form a government, while snap elections could amplify economic and political risks, Daniel Dăianu, president of the Fiscal Council, said on Wednesday at the launch of the Newmoney.ro–INSCOP Economic Sentiment Index.
Dăianu criticized the fact that the country had reached the last decade of September 2026 without a functioning government, describing the situation as a failure and warning that Romania would be “playing with fire” if it entered the realm of snap elections.
The president of the Fiscal Council argued that the government should not have fallen, given the country’s economic situation. He recalled that the freezing of wages and pensions began at the start of 2024 and that, without a fiscal correction package in 2025, the consequences would have been very serious.
Asked whether the increase in taxes and duties had been justified, Dăianu replied that the executive “had no choice.” He also spoke about the need for the population and companies to adapt to economic difficulties, including during periods of crisis. The statements were made amid political instability and pressure to reduce the budget deficit.
