The Bucharest Tribunal rejected, on Monday, the DIICOT request to extend Călin Georgescu’s pretrial detention and ordered that the measure be replaced with judicial supervision. The decision was made in the case in which the former candidate is being investigated for fraud and forming an organized criminal group.
DIICOT may appeal the ruling within 48 hours. Until any appeal is resolved, Călin Georgescu will no longer remain in pretrial detention.
The decision comes after, on October 13, the Bucharest Tribunal had granted the request to replace pretrial detention with house arrest. Prosecutors appealed the ruling, and on October 23 the Bucharest Court of Appeal granted the appeal and definitively rejected the request.
According to DIICOT, Georgescu, Ioan Rusen, and an Italian citizen had allegedly been part, since September 2021, of a group coordinated by a Romanian citizen. Investigators claim that they allegedly convinced a businessman to transfer more than one million euros, in exchange for the promise of a six-million-euro loan, later increased to 15 million. The estimated damage exceeds 1.1 million euros. In the case, precautionary seizures were imposed on accounts and on Georgescu’s villa in Mogoșoaia.
