Greenpeace Romania has challenged the legality of the Neptun Deep project, but the Bucharest Tribunal ruled against it, forcing the organization to pay considerable legal costs to Romgaz and OMV Petrom. Greenpeace has announced it will appeal to the ECHR, arguing that the amount imposed is exorbitant for an NGO acting in the public interest. The organization considers that the decision is contrary to European and national legislation protecting the right to justice in environmental matters. Greenpeace will continue to challenge projects that do not meet environmental standards.
