Traian Băsescu: "PSD has the capacity to negotiate majorities in Parliament. It is childish to appoint a politically unengaged prime minister in a situation like Romania."

Former president Traian Băsescu stated that the current head of state, Nicușor Dan, should expedite the appointment of a candidate for the position of prime minister, emphasizing that this would provide greater power in negotiations for forming a parliamentary majority. Băsescu explained that majorities can only be confirmed through a vote in Parliament, and a designated prime minister has more credibility in negotiations than one who lacks political support. He mentioned that PSD could coalesce a majority, while PNL does not have this capacity.

Băsescu also criticized the idea of appointing a politically unaffiliated prime minister. On the list of potential prime ministers is Eugen Tomac, advisor to Nicușor Dan, as well as other candidates, and the deadline for the official announcement has been moved to after June 1. The parties have failed to reach a consensus on the form of government.

"You cannot know who has the majority until it is voted in Parliament. And it is one thing when this majority is negotiated by a designated prime minister and he has the credibility to negotiate a majority, and another when you say: 'do not come to Cotroceni without a majority'. It is childish, in a situation like Romania's, to appoint a politically unaffiliated prime minister. PSD has the capacity to negotiate majorities in Parliament. I know they have been doing this since they were established. I know they can create majorities, more or less transparent, when they need votes, they have them there," said former president Traian Băsescu on Sunday, according to Romania TV.
