The Neamț branch of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) withdrew its political support for the mayor of Dămuc commune, Anton Covasan, the party’s only mayor in the county following the 2024 local elections. The decision was validated by the party’s Honor, Discipline and Arbitration Jury.
According to the AUR Neamț statement, the measure was taken following the identification of “repeated breaches” of the party’s statute and of the commitments undertaken before the community. The party stated that it dissociates itself from the mayor’s political and administrative activity.
Anton Covasan rejected the indirect accusations and asked that any suspicion or mistake be verified and established by the competent institutions. He stated that he entered politics to contribute to the development of the commune and that he had dedicated years of work to local administration.
The mayor is serving his fourth term. In 2024, he won the elections on behalf of AUR by a margin of just two votes over the PNL candidate.
