AUR denies that Paul Stănescu, former secretary general of the PSD and current senator, was offered by AUR the position of secretary general of the party. The formation’s spokesperson, Ștefăniță Avrămescu, said that “there had been no such discussions”.
Ștefăniță Avrămescu stated that the information was false, according to Cotidianul.
Sources within AUR also said that such a move would be “pure suicide”, specifying that the party already has a secretary general. They accused the emergence of “disinformation” intended to denigrate the formation, create confusion, and exert pressure in the political context.
Paul Stănescu has not held the position of secretary general of the PSD since November 2025, when the party’s leader, Sorin Grindeanu, replaced him with MEP Claudiu Manda. Stănescu was president of the Olt County Council between 2008 and 2016, deputy prime minister and Minister of Development between 2017 and 2019, and is serving his third term as senator.
His name has also been associated with the case concerning subsidies for reeds in the Danube Delta. In 2023, two companies belonging to his family requested subsidies of approximately five million euros for around 36,000 hectares of reeds. The European Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the case and requested the freezing of 4.5 million euros in European funds.
