The U.S. Department of Energy announced on Tuesday a loan of 1 billion dollars to support the resumption of operations at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, which will provide energy for Microsoft’s data centers. The loan aligns with the priorities of the Trump administration, including supporting nuclear energy. Constellation Energy, the owner of the operational reactor, will benefit from reduced financing costs to restart the plant, which can power approximately 800,000 households. The reactor has been shut down for five years, and Constellation announced last year a 1.6 billion dollar plan to restart it, under a 20-year agreement with Microsoft. The plant, located on the island in the Susquehanna River, was the site of the worst commercial nuclear accident in the U.S. in 1979. The resumption of operations comes in a favorable context for nuclear energy, amid rising energy demand and concerns about climate change.
