Researchers from NASA and Case Western Reserve University have identified fire as a major challenge for future crewed missions to the Moon. A new experiment, titled "Flammability of Materials on the Moon" (FM2), will study how flames behave in lunar gravity, where conditions are different from those on Earth.
On Earth, gravity allows hot gases to rise, but on the Moon, this process is much slower, which can lead to the burning of materials that are not flammable on Earth. The NASA-STD-6001B test has been used to assess the flammability of materials, but in microgravity, flames behave differently, forming spherical spots. The FM2 experiment will launch an autonomous camera to the Moon to burn samples of solid fuel and monitor the flames in real time, thus contributing to the understanding of fire dynamics in lunar conditions. This research is essential for the safety of future space missions.
