NASA has published new images of the crater formed on the surface of the Moon following the crash of the upper stage of the Falcon 9 rocket, belonging to SpaceX, on August 5.
Photographs taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) between August 11-12 show a crater approximately 18 meters wide and less than three meters deep.
Although NASA published these images recently, the South Korean agency provided the first photographs of the impact area on August 6.
The LRO images highlight trails of dust and rocks, exposed to solar wind and cosmic radiation, that have been redistributed around the crater.
Obtaining these images required extreme precision, with the probe located 100 kilometers above the impact site, and the orientation of the camera was essential.
These new photographs provide researchers with a detailed understanding of the effects of the impact and the lunar material ejected.
