At the beginning of March, the European Commission registered a European Citizens' Initiative that calls for support for the creation of a European social media platform, partially funded by public funds. Supporters of the project believe that this platform could provide a viable alternative to existing networks, ensuring more control over user data and transparency. The initiative comes against the backdrop of criticism directed at major digital platforms, especially after Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter.

For the initiative to be officially analyzed by Brussels, the organizers must gather over one million signatures from at least seven EU member states, a process that could take up to 18 months. The estimated costs for developing the platform are about one euro per year for each EU citizen, totaling at least 450 million euros annually. Concerns remain regarding the viability of such a platform in the face of global giants like Facebook and Instagram, considering that there have been previous unsuccessful attempts to create European alternatives. For now, the project is in the stage of a civic initiative, and the future of a European social network remains uncertain.
