KiDS J0842+0059 is a newly discovered fossil galaxy 3 billion light-years away, the first of its kind observed outside the local Universe. These galaxies, inactive and very compact, provide a glimpse into the early universe, allowing astronomers to study galaxy formation. Studies suggest that the sudden halt in star formation in these galaxies may be linked to the influence of supermassive black holes, which affect the gas needed for star formation. This discovery is key to understanding the evolution of the cosmos.
