Ukraine’s Prosecutor’s Office accuses Iulia Mendel of high treason and justifying Russia’s aggression

Iulia Mendel, the former spokesperson for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has been accused of high treason and justifying Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the Ukrainian Prosecutor’s Office announced on Tuesday. Prosecutors say they have gathered sufficient evidence to formally designate her as a suspect.

Investigators claim that Mendel used her public profile and experience to spread messages favorable to Russia and discredit Ukraine. The statements cited include claims that there is no freedom of expression in Ukraine and that the country is “on the verge of extinction.” She also reportedly spoke about certain individuals enriching themselves from the war, political clientelism and the persecution of dissidents.

Mendel rejected the accusations in a public message, arguing that their wording demonstrates that her criticism is justified. She denounced what she considers to be the price of freedom of expression under Zelensky’s leadership.

Iulia Mendel served as the presidential spokesperson between 2019 and 2021. After Russia’s invasion in February 2022, she distanced herself from Zelensky, accusing him of corruption, authoritarianism and being an obstacle to peace. Although she condemns Russia’s invasion and attacks, she supports the rapid conclusion of an agreement with Moscow.
