Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy harshly criticized the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense (GUR), following an exchange of fire between agents of the two institutions, which took place in Kyiv. The incident resulted in three officers being injured.
Zelenskyy described the situation as “absolutely shameful” and summoned prosecutors and investigators to clarify the circumstances. The president also announced the dismissal of a senior SBU officer.
“Here, in Ukraine, people may fire only at the Russian occupiers, in defense of Ukraine,” Zelenskyy stated, warning that the state would not accept any further exchanges of fire between its institutions.
According to reports cited by The Guardian, the conflict reportedly began after the SBU detained the leader of a Russian anti-Kremlin unit fighting on Ukraine’s side under the supervision of the GUR. The SBU is Ukraine’s domestic security service, while the GUR conducts military intelligence operations and special operations. The two services were asked to quickly clarify the incident and establish responsibility.
