The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, condemned on Sunday the extension of the suspension of American sanctions on Russian oil, emphasizing that every dollar paid for this oil contributes to financing Moscow's war in Ukraine. The U.S. Treasury Department decided on Friday to extend the suspension of most sanctions on the Russian oil industry until May 16, in the context of the energy crisis generated by conflicts in the Middle East.
Zelensky warned that the relaxation of sanctions allows the sale of Russian oil without consequences, generating approximately 10 billion dollars that are used for attacks against Ukraine. In the last week, Russia carried out over 2,360 drone attacks and 1,320 bombings, including an attack that resulted in the death of a teenager in Chernihiv. The U.S. decision targets all operations related to Russian oil, but transactions with Iran, North Korea, and the occupied regions of Ukraine remain prohibited. Zelensky emphasized the importance of maintaining sanctions to reduce the aggressor's exports.
