The European Commission has announced that Italy, Spain, Greece, and Cyprus will benefit from aid under the Solidarity Mechanism, implemented in 2024, to redistribute at least 30,000 asylum seekers from these countries. This measure aims to reduce the pressure of migration on Mediterranean states, which are facing a disproportionate number of arrivals. The new European migration and asylum policy, which is set to come into force, includes a solidarity system whereby other member states will have to host migrants or pay a financial aid of 20,000 euros per migrant. Negotiations among the 27 member states will establish further details, including the number of migrants each country is willing to accept. Some countries have stated that they will not accept migrants, opting only for financial contributions. Final decisions regarding the relocation of migrants will be made by the end of December.
