Wes Streeting, a Labour MP, sent a letter on Thursday via X network stating that he has lost confidence in the leadership of Keir Starmer, claiming it would be 'shameful and lacking in principles' to remain in power. This comes in the context of Starmer facing increasing pressure to resign after significant electoral losses suffered by the Labour Party. On May 7, the party lost over 1,100 seats in English councils and saw the end of its 27-year dominance in Wales.
In the following days, MP Catherine West issued an ultimatum to Starmer's cabinet, demanding that they challenge the leadership by Monday, or she would do so herself. Although Starmer promised to address the 'big challenges' facing the country, resignations from his cabinet and calls for resignation from MPs suggest a leadership crisis. On May 12, Starmer stated that he would continue to govern, but meetings with Streeting and other cabinet members show internal tensions within the party.
