Viktor Orban, the Prime Minister of Hungary, stated that the idea of using frozen Russian assets to support the reconstruction of Ukraine has no future, highlighting the lack of support in the European Union. These comments were made in the context of a European Council meeting, where the European Commission is examining this possibility. Orban, known as an ally of Russia, has consistently criticized plans to direct Russian assets towards Ukraine. Other countries, such as Belgium, Italy, and Bulgaria, have expressed concerns about the legal risks of this measure. The European Parliament has warned that Ukraine could be left without funds in 2026 without additional support, and Hungary has already blocked the use of the EU budget for this purpose. Orban stated that he is acting for peace, while European officials, such as Kaja Kallas, insist on the need to support Ukraine.
