Vice President JD Vance stated in a recent interview with NBC News that he disagrees with his Republican colleagues who claim that antisemitism is on the rise within the right. Vance emphasized that judging people based on skin color or immutable characteristics is un-American and un-Christian. Although he acknowledged the existence of isolated cases of antisemitism, he asserted that their proportion has remained constant over time and rejected the idea that the Republican Party is more antisemitic than it was 10 or 15 years ago.
This position contrasts with that of Senator Ted Cruz, who has denounced a rise in anti-Israel and anti-Jewish sentiment, including among young conservatives. Recently, notable incidents related to accusations of antisemitism among Republicans have occurred, including leaks of messages from young Republican groups containing antisemitic rhetoric. Additionally, a former Trump nominee resigned after messages emerged in which he acknowledged having a "Nazi tendency."
After the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, American sympathy for Israel has decreased, while the perception of antisemitism as an issue has increased. According to the Anti-Defamation League, incidents of antisemitism have risen significantly, and the American Jewish community is facing an unprecedented level of threat. However, progressive Jewish groups, such as Jewish Voice for Peace, accuse the ADL of misdefining antisemitism, including anti-Zionism in this category, complicating the identification of real cases of antisemitism.
