The Venezuelan judiciary has announced the release of 379 political prisoners, according to a recently enacted amnesty law by the interim government in Caracas, following the ousting of former president Nicolas Maduro. Parliament member Jorge Arreaza stated that the releases will take place between the evening of the announcement and the following morning, and the amnesty requests have been submitted to the competent courts. Although this measure was promised under pressure from the U.S., experts emphasize that not all prisoners will benefit from amnesty, especially those involved in activities deemed terrorist by the current regime.
The law does not cover the entire period of Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro's leadership, but refers to 13 specific periods. Nearly 650 political prisoners remain in prison, and non-governmental organizations criticize the amnesty process, arguing that it excludes many people. Delcy Rodriguez, the interim president, stated that efforts are being made for a more democratic Venezuela and promised reforms. Opponents, including Juan Pablo Guanipa, have called for elections and emphasized the need for lasting reconciliation.
