The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has proposed changes to the long-term budget of the European Union, following threats from the European Parliament to block the initiative. Among the proposed changes are greater powers for regions, guarantees for the agricultural sector, and a strengthened role for the Parliament in the allocation of funds. These changes are intended to support the adoption of the financial framework for the period 2028-2034, which would allow for spending of approximately 2 trillion euros.
Criticism from MEPs targets the lack of transparency in the allocation of funds, and von der Leyen has convened a meeting with high-ranking leaders to discuss these issues. The EU budget must be approved unanimously by the member states and with the agreement of the European Parliament, which makes it necessary to find a consensus to avoid a deadlock.
