Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, emphasized the need to strengthen European borders following the massive influx of migrants who entered the Spanish exclave of Ceuta illegally. In a letter addressed to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, she proposed measures such as increased surveillance and the use of physical barriers, highlighting that the protection of external borders is a shared responsibility of the European Union.

The crisis has generated tensions among member states, with demands from countries like Italy and Denmark for Spain's suspension from the Schengen area, a request that has provoked anger in Madrid. Spain has called for a meeting of EU interior ministers to discuss a common response to the challenges of migration.

Von der Leyen also proposed increasing support for Morocco in its efforts to combat illegal migration, highlighting the importance of the partnership with this country. The crisis in Ceuta represents a major test for the EU Migration Pact, which aims to manage migration and solidarity among member states.
