At a recent meeting of the Contact Group for the Defense of Ukraine, Ukrainian Defense Minister, Denis Shmyhal, requested allies to allocate at least 0.25% of their GDP in 2026 to support Kyiv's military spending, which amounts to approximately 120 billion dollars. Ukraine urgently needs an additional 60 billion dollars to continue the fight against Russia, which is planning defense spending of 186 billion dollars in 2026.
Shmyhal emphasized that air defense is a priority, noting that Ukraine has received only 13 of the 300 NASAMS missiles requested. During the meeting, British and German officials announced significant contributions to Ukraine's defense, and military support will continue regardless of the developments in peace negotiations.
