Two inmates escaped from the prison in Dijon, France, on the night from Wednesday to Thursday, cutting the bars of their cell with blades that prosecutors suspect were delivered by a drone. The two, a 19-year-old man arrested on drug charges, and another 32-year-old, imprisoned for threats and domestic violence, used blankets to jump over the barbed wire fence. The escape was discovered during routine checks at 7:00 AM.
The prison, which houses 311 inmates in a space designed for 180, is facing an occupancy rate of 173%. This escape was preceded by another recent escape from a different penitentiary. The Force Ouvriere Justice union has drawn attention to the deteriorating security conditions in prisons, while France is facing significant overcrowding in prisons, with an occupancy rate of 135.8%.
