Two Romanians, aged 38 and 39, were detained in France after allegedly stealing two trailers loaded with 95 motorcycles from a truck parking area in Masquefa, Barcelona province. The theft took place on Sunday, September 27, and investigators say the suspects intended to transport the motorcycles to Romania to sell them.
The plan was foiled with the help of factory-installed GPS systems in the motorcycles’ chassis. The thieves dismantled the tracking devices installed on the trailers and replaced the license plates with Romanian ones, which were allegedly forged. However, the motorcycles’ GPS systems allowed Spanish police to track the vehicles’ movements.
Officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra in Martorell alerted French police after the trailers crossed the border. The vehicles were located in Cagnes-sur-Mer, where the two suspects were stopped and detained a few hours after the theft. All 95 motorcycles, new models from Italian and French brands, were recovered.
The original license plates and several documents were found abandoned in a field near the parking area. The investigation is continuing in cooperation with the Catalan police and aims to establish whether other people were involved in the operation. The case was coordinated through the police and customs cooperation center in El Pertús, on the border between Spain and France.
