Three Romanians were arrested in Spain on September 22, in the town of Mejorada del Campo, on suspicion of stealing catalytic converters from cars parked on the streets. Spanish authorities attribute more than 40 thefts committed in the provinces of Zaragoza, Palencia, Valladolid, and Granada to them.
The group was based in the Community of Madrid, but its members traveled at night to other towns to carry out their activities. According to the Civil Guard, the suspects quickly removed the catalytic converters, then returned to their home province, where the parts were sold. Two other people, Spanish citizens, are being investigated in the same case.
The investigation began in July, following a series of thefts reported in several provinces. Cross-referencing the information indicated that the crimes were committed by the same suspects, who lived in Madrid. The investigation led to the clarification of 17 thefts in Cuarte de Huerva, five in Venta de Baños, five in Laguna de Duero, four in Arroyo de la Encomienda, and nine in the province of Granada.
The three Romanians, aged between 36 and 44, are accused of repeated theft and membership in a criminal group. The catalytic converters are targeted for the precious metals they contain, such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium.
