Five Romanians were arrested by the Carabinieri in Italy after allegedly stealing approximately three tons of copper from a construction site for a gas pipeline in Badia Tedalda, in the province of Arezzo. The metal was found in two cars stopped in the Sansepolcro area, and the suspects were detained after a traffic pursuit.
The incident began when a patrol spotted the two cars and ordered the drivers to stop. They ignored the signals and accelerated, prompting the Carabinieri to pursue them. During the escape, one of the men allegedly tried to jump from a moving vehicle.
After the vehicles were stopped, officers conducted searches and discovered around 3,000 kilograms of copper, as well as tools that investigators believe were intended for break-ins. The entire quantity of metal was seized.
The checks led to the identification of the suspected site of the theft, within the industrial area of the gas construction site in Badia Tedalda. After the works manager filed a complaint, the five men were remanded in custody. According to the Carabinieri, they had no fixed residence and were known to have criminal records. The suspects are being investigated for aggravated theft and unlawful possession of tools intended for burglary.
