Two Romanian citizens were arrested in the Italian province of Biella on suspicion of repeatedly stealing products from supermarkets. The incident took place on October 28, in the town of Mongrando and the Occhieppo Inferiore area, following a surveillance operation by the State Police.
Police officers spotted the two men leaving a Conad supermarket with two full bags, then followed them to a Famila store and a Tigotà store. At the latter, the men allegedly hid several tubes of toothpaste in a bag, under a mat, while one of them distracted the cashier and the other passed through the security area without paying.
The two abandoned the goods and fled after noticing an undercover police officer. They tried to escape in a rented car, but the vehicle was stopped by officers. According to the authorities, the Romanians resisted arrest and caused the police officers scratches and superficial injuries.
Products that investigators believe came from the Conad supermarket were also found in the vehicle, along with a bag bearing the Carrefour logo. The total value of the goods was estimated at more than €2,300. After their hearing on October 30, the two men were banned from residing in Biella province.
