Hakan Fidan, the Turkish foreign minister, requested his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araqchi, to address 'regional tensions' through negotiations, according to the state agency Anadolu. This follows a previous phone conversation between the two officials. Fidan did not specify whether he was referring to the anti-government protests in Iran, where over 2,000 people have died, or to the conflict between Iran and Israel, which involves armed groups in various countries.

Additionally, Fidan met with the U.S. special envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, and is set to visit the United Arab Emirates. Although Turkey maintains good neighborly relations with Iran, bilateral trade is limited, and Ankara has taken a different stance towards Tehran in the context of the civil war in Syria.
