U.S. President Donald Trump suspended on Tuesday evening the 50% tariffs on certain imports from Canada, before they were set to take effect, stating that the two countries reached an agreement following discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The tariffs, previously announced in response to Canada's discriminatory practices, would have affected imports worth approximately $20 billion, including hockey sticks and wine. The measure was to be applied based on a rare provision of the Tariff Act of 1930. Dan Kelly, president of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, warned that the tariffs could have completely halted sales to the U.S. for many Canadian companies.
Trump also suggested the possibility of reviving the Keystone XL project, a pipeline between Canada and the U.S. that was canceled by the Biden administration.
