The Australian government rejected on Thursday calls for the arrest of Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who is visiting Australia to pay tribute to the victims of the antisemitic attack on Bondi Beach in Sydney.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced that Israeli President Isaac Herzog will undertake a four-day visit to Australia, at the invitation of the government, to pay tribute to the victims of the terrorist attack at Bondi, in which 15 people were killed. This visit takes place in the context of support for the Australian Jewish community, affected by the worst antisemitic attack in the country's history. However, Herzog's visit is controversial, given the findings of an independent commission that accused Israel of genocide in Gaza.
Human rights lawyer Chris Sidoti has called for the invitation to be withdrawn, considering Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's decision a "blunder".
Pro-Palestinian activists are planning protests, but police have banned gatherings in Sydney, where a young man has been charged with making death threats against the Israeli president.
