The USA suspends the Visa Lottery after the attack at Brown University, committed by a beneficiary of this program.

Kristi Noem (photo), the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, ordered the immediate suspension of the Diversity Immigrant Visa (DVI) program, also known as the visa lottery, after it was revealed that the suspect in the Brown University shooting, Claudio Neves Valente, benefited from this program to enter the U.S. in 2017.

In a post on X, Noem emphasized that Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese citizen, should not have been granted permission to enter the country. The attack, which resulted in the deaths of two students and a professor from MIT, prompted the Secretary to act quickly to prevent further tragedies. The DVI program, established in 1990, allows for the issuance of approximately 50,000 visas annually, but Noem considers it a "disastrous program."
