The United States has suspended all asylum decisions following an attack in which two members of the National Guard were shot, one of whom later died. The Director of the Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Joseph Edlow, announced that the measure will remain in effect until further checks on foreigners are conducted.
President Donald Trump imposed additional restrictions, including a halt to admissions from "third world countries" and a review of "green cards" for citizens from countries deemed high-risk, such as Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, Cuba, and Venezuela. The incident was attributed to an Afghan suspect who entered the U.S. in 2021, and Trump blamed refugees for the country's social problems, which sparked criticism from human rights groups. Nearly 1.5 million asylum seekers were awaiting a response to their applications in December 2024.
