The withdrawal of the U.S. from joint efforts to combat disinformation particularly targets states considered hostile, such as Russia, China, and Iran. The decision comes after the dismantling of government agencies under the Trump administration, which were tasked with protecting the integrity of elections and combating foreign influence. The canceled memoranda, part of the Global Engagement Center initiative, involved 22 European and African countries in the fight against information manipulation. James Rubin, former director of the center, called the measure a 'unilateral act of disarmament' in the context of the current information war.
