The United States intends to impose a new round of sanctions against Russia's energy sector in response to the possible rejection of the peace agreement with Ukraine by President Vladimir Putin. Among the proposed measures are targeting Russia's phantom fleet ships and traders facilitating oil transactions. The sanctions could be announced soon, and discussions have taken place between American officials and European ambassadors.

Although previous sanctions have not changed Putin's behavior, they have led to a decrease in oil prices. Meanwhile, progress in peace negotiations between the US and Ukraine has been reported, but sensitive questions remain regarding the territories in eastern Ukraine and security guarantees. Russia continues to demand the cession of territories, and American officials believe that frozen Russian assets could be included in any future peace agreement. However, Putin has shown no signs of being willing to abandon his military objectives.
