The measure continues the pressure policy exerted by Washington on the communist leadership in Havana, under the conditions in which Diaz-Canel has been in charge of the country since 2018. The Cuban government reacted promptly, with Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez calling the sanctions "shameful" and a manifestation of American interventionism. He stated that any attempt by the United States to provoke tensions between the two countries is doomed to failure. The new sanctions come after last month, Washington imposed restrictive measures against other Cuban officials, including military leaders and representatives of the intelligence services.
