The United States and Mexico concluded the first round of bilateral discussions on Friday to review the trade rules under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which also includes Canada. The U.S. Trade Representative's Office stated that the purpose of these negotiations is to reduce the trade deficit with Mexico and strengthen U.S. supply chains. The discussions focused on rules of origin for vehicle components, oil, aluminum, and economic security.
Upcoming meetings are scheduled for June 16 and 17 in Washington, where agricultural issues and fair competition rules will be addressed. A third round of negotiations is planned for the week of July 20 in Mexico City. Canada has not yet been invited to these discussions.
