The U.S. Supreme Court decided on Monday to reinstate the electoral map of the state of Texas, a measure that could help the Republican Party win five seats in the House of Representatives following the midterm elections in November.
The decision, adopted by a 6-3 majority, formalizes a temporary ruling from December that revised the electoral districts in Texas. The map, approved by the Texas legislature and Republican Governor Greg Abbott, has been criticized for the technique of 'gerrymandering', which aims to dilute the Democratic vote.
The Supreme Court rejected a previous ruling that blocked the use of the new map, deemed discriminatory on racial grounds. This situation has generated tensions between Democrats and Republicans, with Democrats accusing Republicans of trying to reduce minority representation.
Additionally, other states, such as California and Virginia, have reconfigured their electoral maps, complicating the strategy for Republicans.
